We are searching for an outstanding consultant psychiatrist to direct inpatient care at the Coombehaven Ward, part of our purpose-built, 32-bed inpatient facility The Cedars. Replacing an established and respected consultant, you will use your skills, experience and insights to help us continue to deliver high-quality, person-centred care for those who need it.
You will have strong professional qualifications and an impressive history of delivering recovery-focused mental health care in an inpatient setting. This is a challenging and hands-on role that will see you lead clinical meetings, review inpatient treatment and diagnosis, attend risk assessments, pre-discharge, ward community and staff support meetings. .
You will play a leading role in a committed multidisciplinary team where you will participate meaningfully in all aspects of clinical governance. An effective communicator it will be your responsibility to provide clear clinical support and advice to nursing staff and the trust management team.

You will be an experienced mental health professional with a detailed and current knowledge of NHS, local government and national strategies and policies. Registered with the GMC, you will be eligible to hold Approved Clinician status at appointment.
You will have substantial experience of working in inpatient mental health services, with a proven commitment to improving the quality of care delivered. We expect you to have a broad experience of psychiatric care, including community services.
An established professional you will be a clear communicator, capable of leading and inspiring a multi-disciplinary team. Working with two trainee doctors, you will oversee their development, providing strict consultant supervision.
You will be called on to make difficult professional decisions that change lives – working with all team members to deliver a package of care that is evidence-based, recovery-focused, and effectively risk-managed. Underpinning your approach will be an ability to understand and apply the latest research and findings.
Personally, you will be an excellent communicator, calmly and clearly explaining your decisions to service users, carers, staff and stakeholders. We expect you to understand the fundamental principles of patient-centre care, embedding it within teams and systems, and continually working to improve the quality of services we deliver.
Keen to inspire the next generation of professionals, you will be experienced at undergraduate teaching, lecturing and clinical supervision. You will use your experience, insight and knowledge to maintain and improve the quality of inpatient services – introducing new approaches informed by the latest evidence.
Located within Wonford House, Exeter, the Cedars is our purpose-built, 32-bed unit providing inpatient mental health care to those who need it. Patients may be referred to the unit if home treatment is unsuccessful or if inpatient treatment is more suitable. GPs can refer directly to the service, but most patients arrive through local community mental health teams. The unit is served by a senior nurse, ward manager, three assistant ward managers, twelve staff nurses, two trainee practitioners and nine healthcare assistants.
You will be expected to take part in on-call rota, providing robust cross-cover arrangements. Our consultants are supported by a dedicated full-time medical staffing department.
